Chris Brown is absolutely smitten with his girlfriend Karrueche Tran at the moment so it should come as no surprise that the ‘Loyal’ star has shot down hopes of a reconciliation with his former love Rihanna, insisting that the pair are simply friends who are “just having fun.”
RiRi and Chris famously split in 2009 after he brutally assaulted her but they briefly reconciled last year until they broke up again and he rekindled his on/off romance with model Karrueche. Fans are still longing for the couple to get back together but according to Chris, they’re happy being friends right now. He told Entertainment Tonight this week: “We’re friends. Nothing too serious… We’re not trying to start a life together right now, we’re just having fun.”
Chris, 25, also addressed speculation that the track ‘Drunk Text’ was written about Rihanna with fans believing that the lyric: “If by chance you’re laying next to someone else right now/I hope it’s the worst sex ever,” was directed at his pretty ex. However, the singer says he doesn’t use their troubled relationship as inspiration for all his music, explaining: “Oh no, not at all. I think that’s just the fans’ perception or the media’s perception at all times because of our history.
“But whenever we do music, people can make the assumption and that’s fine because if they buy more because they think that, then go ahead and buy a thousand copies! But as far as me writing and going into that, I don’t really try to put my focus on Rihanna every song. At the end of the day it’s almost six, seven years later. It’s like, how many more times am I going to talk about the same situation?” he said.
While that particular song may not be about RiRi, Chris says he has no problem getting in the studio and working together with his ex, telling Access Hollywood: “If she’s working on an album [and] she wants me on a record, she can call. I’ll get on the record. If I need her on something, it’s vice versa. So, that friendship, I think speaks volumes without having to speak.”
Speaking about their friendship, Chris added: “Me and her are friends. We have a great understanding. There’s no issues. We’ve been friends. We’ve known each other for almost 10 years, the same amount of time I’ve been doing music. I don’t think that’s ever gonna change…we’re friends.”
